"I'm not as dumb as I look."

- The only line from Matt's proposal that Coco remembered

In January 2021, Matt flew to LA to ask Coco’s parents for permission to marry their daughter. After a few twisted arms, they said yes, and welcomed Matt to the family. The plan was for Matt to pop the question over the summer, as the two had planned a scuba diving trip to Croatia. Well, needless to say that scuba trip never happened (you can help make the mulligan happen here, but more on that later). And layoffs and pay cuts made buying a diamond ring look like a scary proposition, as most of Matt’s savings were now earmarked for black market toilet paper. But the time spent cooped up in their apartment together deepened Matt’s resolve to pop the question. And all the cancelled plans gave Matt time to ruminate on how to still make the proposal feel more extraordinary than the times at hand.

Fortunately, Matt had a secret weapon: he was going to be marrying into a spectacular family. And the family had plans to converge at Coco’s parent's house for a week in July. Matt told the Goetzes that he was going to propose while they were all together, as family was so incredibly important to Coco. But while Matt expected the family to be supportive (he had, after all, twisted all the right arms in January), he didn’t expect them rally around the cause as they did, scouting beaches for perfect lighting, arranging a takeout meal from a family favorite restaurant, and even stringing up hundreds of feet of Christmas lights in the backyard over the course of a full week.

fake photo shoot

Matt lured Coco to Treasure Island beach in Laguna Beach, CA, under the guise of taking a family portrait. When Coco's dad suggested he take a photo of the two them before Matt sweat through his shirt, that was the cue.

she said hell yes

Matt launched into a long and heartfelt speech (the only line from which Coco recalled was, “I’m not as dumb as I look”). Coco’s brother secretly had Matt’s parents on Zoom so they could be a part of the special moment too (because what’s a pandemic proposal without Zoom)?

welcome to cafe coco

After she said yes, the most special part of the night occurred. As the pandemic had shuttered local eateries, the Goetzes created one in their backyard. Hundreds of twinkling lights, balloons and bouquets of flowers transformed the patio into a truly magical setting. The newly unified family toasted champagne and shared food and laughs under the stars.

(but didn't)

Coco noticed several unexplained vases of flowers and bouquets of balloons in the downstairs bedroom, but didn't even think of questioning why they were there or what they were for.

The entire day leading up to the proposal, Matt was sweating more than Coco thought was humanly possible from someone not on their death bed. He had to change his shirt before heading to the beach. Twice.

On their drive down to OC, Matt's dad asked him, "So, are you nervous for this weekend?" not realizing he was on speaker phone and Coco was next to him. Luckily, she just chalked it up to "Larry being Larry!"

The family played a game of Code Names prior to their "photo shoot." The cards that were drawn (no joke): a diamond ring and a figure on bended knee. Clearly, the board game Gods were in on Matt's plans.
